Yovany Leopoldo Alas (Left)

Born in Havana, Cuba, half French, half Spanish.
Son of famous international singer/songwriter
Carlos Alas del Casino.

Leopoldo Alas (Clarín).1852-1901, Spanish novelist, short-story writer, and literary critic who wrote under the pseudonym Clarín, b. Zamora. Although he began his literary career as a journalist, he later was a professor of law at the Univ. of Oviedo.




   At the age of three, Yovany Leopoldo Alas started to master the art of poetry and singing. At age eight, he developed an interest in classical guitar and went to study at `El Conservatorio de Guanabacoa`, studying music theory and rhythm. At age eleven, Yovany appeared on several occasions on channel 6 (CMQ TV) in El Vedado, Havana and sang at theaters and other events. At the age of 13, he was forced to leave Cuba and his family behind, arriving in Miami, Florida.

   Due to the pressure of leaving his family and country behind, Yovany dropped out of music for a season. At age 17 he moved from Miami to New York, where he met several musicians, and joined musical forces to create a group called "Cold Winter". Surpassing all obstacles of life, including that of a new language, he was lead singer for the group for several years.

   During this time, he met several Rock Stars such as Alice Cooper (at Nobody's Lounge) in Manhattan, who invited him to a recording session at Studio 54 in NY. After some time, the band went their separate ways and Yovany moved back to Miami.

   While there, he played with the group called “The Blue Notes” at the Newport Hotel and Lounge. He was then invited to join the group as a percussionist, congas, and timbales player, but Yovany's love for the arts was singing and songwriting.

   Yovany's family finally arrived in Miami in 1978. Wanting to catch up lost time with them, he backed away again from the music scene for some time. In 1989, Yovany, his wife Lydia and their son Christopher moved to Sarasota, Florida, where they now reside. .

   While in Sarasota, Florida, Yovany teamed up with a group call The Lotus Fire, and has performed at many different places such as coffee houses, night clubs, etc. Some such places he has performed are: Fandango Int. Cafe, Gastronomia, Alley Cat Cafe, Bob's Boathouse, Fish Market Restaurant, Flowers Cafe, St. Armand's Circle, Main Street Depot downtown Sarasota etc. He has also appeared on Channel 40 News TV while singing for the disabled children at the United Cerebral Palsy Institute.

   After departing from Lotus Fire he formed a group call Yovany & Latin Passion being joined by his lovely and beautiful wife Lydia ( singer/dancer) who studied in Cuba Flamenco and Ballet from a young age, and multi talented friend and now considered family to Latin Passion Pianist Pepe Olarte native of Colombia, raised in New York City, who played with some of the finest orchestra in the latin scene like Bomberito Zarzuela Orchestra.

   They were performing at Phat Catz in Venice, Florida. They also performed for Katherine Harris, The Republican Party at Robarts Arena in Sarasota and Hispanics for Jeb Bush.

    Going back to his roots, Yovany has been singing in Spanish many of the songs his father sang when Yovany was just a little boy. Songs like: Contigo en la Distancia, Perfidia, Manana de Carnaval, Savor a Mi, Solamente una vez, Casilda and many more.

Yovany says that what he enjoys the most is "seeing his fans having a good time through his music.
   Since 2006 Yovany has been Organizer and President of"The Hispanic Latino Festival LLC" an annual fundraiser event geard towards education made possible by Academy of Latin Arts and Science.org.
   And on October 2nd, 2010 will be the 6th annual event.
